Frequently asked questions about Hinuera Stone
What is Hinuera Stone?
Hinuera stone is a natural and volcanic stone that is only found in a small settlement in the Waikato, and is named after its place of origin. It has been quarried from the hills of Hinuera since 1893, but has been used on a larger scale since 1954. Hinuera stone is soft and porous material, allowing it to absorb water and moisture.
Hinuera stone is predominantly used as cladding on houses and for other decorative purposes, such as feature walls, fences and entrance ways.
Do I need to get my Hinuera Stone cleaned?
If your Hinuera stone is showing signs of black, pink or orange mould, lichen and green growth, and generally wall to wall discolouration and losing its natural look, then yes, it needs cleaning.
A good indication of what your Hinuera stone originally looked like, is to inspect the top ¼ of a wall under your soffits or in a protected area. For example, at the front entrance or walls that are not exposed to the elements.
If you are building a new Hinuera stone home, it is just as important to clean it before it is sealed. In the process of the house being built, the Hinuera stone should be protected with temporary downpipes. Dirt and building materials should be kept away from the bottom course of the Hinuera stone. During the build a lot of dust settles on the pointing and the face of the Hinuera stone. If this is not removed, it will leave streaking and uneven discolouration during the sealing process.
Do not waterblast your Hinuera stone. It is a soft porous stone and the high-pressure water will damage and pit the surface of it. Contact us for a free assessment and general check-up of your Hinuera stone.
Do I need to get my Hinuera Stone sealed?
Yes. It is very important to seal your Hinuera stone.
For existing and new builds, sealing your Hinuera stone home provides the stone with a protective coating that enables it to breath, but stops the penetration of water. This also allows the stone to retain is natural characteristics.
Sealed stone keeps the Hinuera dry, preventing mould and lichen to take hold. Providing you with a drier and healthier home.
Do not attempt to seal your Hinuera stone yourself. It is a specialised process and done incorrectly, you can cause irreversible damage to your home.
